WHAT IS OBESITY?

UNDERSTANDING OBESITY

Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive body fat. It is now considered as a “Killer lifestyle” disease& is an important cause of preventable death worldwide.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO); 1.2 billon people worldwide are obese of which 30 million Indians are obese, and most likely to double in next 5 years.

More than 15 to 20% percent of the Indian populations are obese. There is an urgent need to creat public awareness about the mechanisms of identification, prevention and treatment of severe obesity..

WHAT CAUSES OBESITY?

Obesity is due to an individual taking in more calories than they burn over an extended period of        time. These “extra” calories are stored as fat. Although there are several factors that can lead to this energy imbalance in obese individuals, the main contributors are behaviour, environment and genetics.

 THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES ARE DONE:

(A). ENDOSCOPIC:

Intra Gastric Balloon Insertion

Which involves no surgery. This balloon is inserted in the stomachendoscopically.

It remainsin place for ½ year of induces weight loss.

(B). LAPAROSCOPIC PROCEDURES:

(1)Sleeve Gastrectomy

(2) Roux-En-YGastricBy pass

(3) Mini Gastric Bypass or OAGB

1.SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

The stomach i reduced to about 25% of its original size, by surgical removal

of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. It combines a satisfying gastric restriction with appetite suppression.

ADVANTAGES

  • Less chances of complications such as migration, erosion and inflection.
  • Great appetite suppression.
  • Lower risk of peptic ulcer.
  • No vitamin or drugs malabsorption.
  1. GASTRIC BYPASS (ROUX-EN-Y)

Strapling is used to create a small, upper stomach pouch which restricts the amount of food to be consumed. A portion of small bowel is bypassed thus delaying food from mixing with digestive juices to avoid complete calorie absortion.

ADVANTAGES

About 96% of health conditions like sleep, Apnea, high BP, Type II Diabetes, depression and back pain get improved or resolved.

3.MINI GASTRIC BYPASS/ ONE ANASTOMOSIS BYPASS

Mini gastric bypass is a less invasive and an alternative to standard gastric bypass; but produces similar results. This procedure is performed laparoscopically, meaning the surgeon works through several small incisions using a tiny camera (called a laparoscope) and a television screen to guide special instruments through these incisions.

ADVANTAGES

  • MGB is low risk surgery.
  • It has excellent weight loss and minimal pain.
  • It can be easily reversed or revised.
